ISO 13009 Certification

The ISO 13009 standard establishes general requirements and recommendations for beach operators providing tourist services.

It provides guidance on the management and sustainable planning of infrastructure, services, safety, information, communication, cleanliness, and waste removal.

The purpose of the ISO 13009 standard is to provide a common operational framework for all beach establishment operators, both public and private.

The standard defines best practices for managing environmental, social, and economic aspects, covering both infrastructure and the services provided to users.

By choosing to certify beach management in accordance with the international ISO 13009:2015 standard, operators demonstrate sustainable management and compliance with quality requirements to all stakeholders.

The adoption of a certified system by businesses is voluntary. However, some local authorities or public tenders may require its adoption as a preferential criterion for awarding concessions or achieving specific tourism recognitions.

Becoming certified is a strategic choice made by the managing entity or beach business.

The process for obtaining and maintaining ISO 13009 certification consists of several stages:

Certification Request

In this initial stage, economic terms and the activities to be performed by the assessors during the certification process are agreed upon. This phase concludes with the signing of a three-year contract between the company and the Certification Body. The assessment process then begins.

Initial Assessment 

The assessment process under the ISO 13009 standard involves document review, on-site audits with direct observation, staff interviews, and detailed checks on infrastructure, services provided, records, complaint management, key indicators, and minimum requirements. These initial verification activities typically take place during the beach season.

Sorveillance – First and second maintenance audits

Three-year Renewal

To ensure that service standards are maintained over time, a renewal assessment (recertification) is carried out at the end of the three-year period: an audit that extends the validity of the certificate for an additional three-year cycle.
